Fused Glass 101   


What is fused glass?!?  This exciting, hands-on class is designed to teach beginners the foundations of glass fusing.  Step-by-step instructions from selecting and cutting glass to color layering secrets and kiln firing techniques will be explored.  Gain a thorough understanding of the process while creating fused glass jewelry and an unique sun catcher!

Maximum class size: 5 students

Class hours:

New Arrival

It's a BOY! Cooper Allen was born Friday, 10-15 at 10:15pm and weighed 6lbs 15oz. (Yes, thankfully not 10lbs 15oz - especially since we had a natural, epidural-free birth!)

Yay! Going home from the hospital!

And our little man decided to come 10 days early! I had just shipped out 14 boxes to galleries/clients in 6 states on Wednesday and started my maternity leave, thinking I had 2 weeks to relax and finish up some things around the house. Well, Cooper had other plans....

We are so in love and doing great! I'm taking the next few months off, so I'll see you around.

From Charlie Cummings Gallery - "Best Foot Forward is a fund-raiser for University of Florida Ceramics major Drew Johnson, a junior student who lost a foot in a motorcycle accident. He was hit by a driver who had no ability to pay, leaving Drew with large hospital bills. Drew has a wonderful can-do attitude, is a very promising student, and is now back at school.

Potters, sculptors and clay related businesses have generously donated 191 items to help raise money for Drew. Please show your support both for Drew and for the generous artists whose donations make this auction possible by bidding on items in this auction.

Heading West - The Clay Studio of Missoula

More exciting news and adventures to share! I recently found out that I was chosen for a short-term residency position at The Clay Studio of Missoula in Montana.
So, I'm taking my baby bump out west to Big Sky Country for a bit of an adventure. I'm looking forward to having a month to just explore and create. I have so many ideas and techniques that I want to investigate! The plan is to continue developing the current direction of my work; new sculptural forms I started during my post-bacc at UF.

And the timing is perfect! Not only am I grateful to have an opportunity to do this before the baby comes, but I'll still be in my 2nd trimester (aka the "honeymoon phase of pregnancy") so energy will be up and I'll be feeling great.

So, we've got a whirlwind week ahead as I pack and prepare for this amazing opportunity. Thank you!

It's Studio Stroll Time Again!

Come check out Asheville's River Arts District this weekend, June 12-13 from 10-6, for the June 2010 Studio Stroll. Visit 120 working artist studios and galleries. Free rides available on the Asheville Historic Trolley between studios.

This will be my 11th Stroll at CURVE studios & garden and there have been a lot of exciting changes happening. Since the November stroll a host of top-notch artists have moved in and many favorites have rearranged their spaces adding a fresh new look.

Where is CURVE studios & garden you ask? It's #6 - 12 Riverside Drive, Asheville, NC. In Asheville's River Arts District across from 12 Bones Smokehouse. You know, 12 Bones, the amazing BBQ joint where Obama and Michelle eat when they go to Asheville!

Ancient Arts - Opening Reception, Ocala, FL

Well, just because I wont be at the Opening of the Contemporary Clay Biennial in Grand Junction, CO tomorrow night doesn't mean that I won't still be out enjoying some art.

It's First Friday here in Ocala, FL, and a group of downtown artists and businesses have recently organized a monthly Art Walk! It's so exciting to see the changes Ocala is making to support the Arts!


To coincide with the Art Walk, Marion Cultural Alliance is hosting the Opening Reception for Ancient Arts at Brick City Center for the Arts. This invitational show emphasizes ceramics, sculpture, encaustic, glass, wood, and drawing and I am honored to be a part of the group selected! The reception is from 6-9 tomorrow, June 4th and the show runs through July 6.

Contemporary Clay Biennial - Opening Friday

Headed to NCECA Philadelphia 2010

I'm leaving tomorrow for Philadelphia, PA and my first NCECA conference (National Council on the Education for Ceramic Arts)! I can hardly imagine 5000 ceramic artists all in the same city! Very exciting!

CURVE studios & garden Celebrates Growth - Spring Open House

ASHEVILLE -- Fresh off its most successful year ever in Asheville’s River Arts District, CURVE studios & garden will celebrate the energy of the season by spotlighting seven new CURVE artists during its Spring 2010 Open House Weekend April 23-25, and Twilight Party, Friday, April 23.

Despite the sluggish economy, CURVE artists found 2009 rewarding. “What recession?” responded Pattiy Torno, CURVE studios & garden owner, when asked how the enclave of artists who maintain working studios in 6, 9 and 12 Riverside Drive were handling the challenging retail climate. “Our customers are focusing on buying local, buying handmade & supporting the best and the brightest in the Asheville RAD,” she added.

The CURVE studios & garden Spring 2010 Open House Weekend is an opportunity for visitors to enjoy the beauty of new growth in the garden & in the studios of the seven new resident artists. Barb Butler and Karen Donde are Sutherland Handweaving in #6. Fran Welch and Greg Vineyard, upstairs in #9 and Akira Satake, Kyle Carpenter and Linda McFarling, downstairs in #12, all work in ceramics.

In addition, some CURVE artists are showing off new studios. The demand for works by encaustic painter Constance Williams has predicated the need for a larger studio. Williams can now be found on the main floor of #9. Cassie Ryalls and Jenny Mastin have moved upstairs in #9. Maria Andrade Troya has moved her pottery over into #12 CURVE. Torno and Meagan Chaney remain in #6. Represented artists include Simone Wilson and Mimi Strang in #6 and Patty Bilbro, Cynthia Wynn, Kelly Prestwood and Mystery Masiello in #9 CURVE.

Open house hours are 11 am-8 pm Friday and 11 am-4 pm Saturday and Sunday. The twilight party begins at 5 pm Friday and features a Mediterranean-themed feast, hand made chocolates, wine, Wedge beer and music. Everyone is welcome.

Throughout the weekend, CURVE studios & garden artists will offer in-studio demonstrations. Sutherland Handweaving will present its Just Weave class, inviting beginning and experienced weavers to weave a scarf in one day. Cost for the Just Weave class is $75 plus yarn, and reservations are required.

Clay and Blogs: Telling a Story

I am honored to have been invited to participate in an exhibit entitled "Clay and Blogs: Telling a Story" to be hosted by the Arts Council of Moore County and held at the Campbell House Gallery, in Southern Pines, NC from October 1 - November 1, 2010. Meredith Heywood of Why Not Pottery is curating the exhibit, which includes over 30 artist-bloggers from around the world!My good friend, and potter Joy Tanner described the show in a Jan 25th post to her blog Journeys in and Around the Studio. I'm re-posted this with her permission:

"People blog for multiple reasons and even with the numerous pottery blogs out there you can find a variety pack of topics within the medium, or even a variety of reasons why people choose to blog. I think blogging is a great tool for people to see behind the scenes of the potter in the studio and their quiet musings; the ups, the downs, the successes, the failures, the determination to keep going, as well as a particular technique or what they are currently working on at that time.

For me, blogging is a great chance to clarify my thoughts about choices behind my work, and to show my inspirations behind the pots. Seeing those quiet musings in real words is different than just thinking it. Sharing it also helps others learn the voice of the potter behind the pots. I've always felt you can tell a lot about a potter from their pots. Just like people matching their dogs, potters often match their pots! That's why it's so neat for potters to raise their voices and share the inner workings of their studios. Blogging also brings about a sense of community between other potters and artists alike, who can learn, be inspired, or simply relate to the ramblings of the self employed artist."

I completely agree with Joy! While she talks specifically about pottery, I think her comments apply to other blogs as well - sculpture, painting, jewelry, woodworking, etc. Blogging has been a great way for me to share what I am working on and build a community of support.

Thank you Meredith for curating should be an exciting event! I'm looking forward to exhibiting some new work. (Which by the way is undergoing a lot of radical changes. I'll post images as soon as I'm ready for the world to see what's been going on behind the scenes.)
